Firefighter Pay Hike Gets New Lifeline Under Spending Bill

Federal firefighters would continue to receive a pay increase through the end of September under a spending bill that Congress plans to vote on this week.

The Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies appropriations legislation released on Sunday would fully fund through fiscal 2024 the temporary salary boost for federal wildland firefighters, who are specially trained to combat wildfires in forests, grasslands, and wilderness areas. The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law (Public Law 117-58) mandated the temporary salary adjustment.
