Former Private Prison Executive Picked as ICE’s Acting Director

David Venturella, a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement official and former GEO Group executive, will serve as ICE’s acting director when Todd Lyons departs May 31, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Tuesday.

The department is recalibrating its immigration messaging and operations under Secretary Markwayne Mullin following former DHS secretary Kristi Noem’s departure, while continuing a broad expansion of detention capacity backed by billions of dollars in new funding.

Venturella workedin the private sector, including at GEO Group, one of the largest US private prison and immigration detention contractors for DHS and ICE.
