FTC Publishes Finalized Children Data Privacy Rule Amendments

The Federal Trade Commission published updates to its Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule on Tuesday, finalizing a revamp of its decade-old kids’ privacy regulation.

The amendments seek to strengthen protection of children’s personal information, give parents more control over their children’s data online, and clarify corporate requirements for handling information of kids under 13.

How the agency will enforce the rules under its new leadership is for now unclear. New FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson had voted to approve the rules in January while an agency commissioner, but criticized its timing as well with certain details.
