Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Democrats should be working out a deal with the White House on government funding and homeland security policy as a partial shutdown looms at the end of the week.

Republicans and Democrats are digging in on a standoff that emerged on Department of Homeland Security funding in the wake of two shootings by federal agents in Minnesota. Republican leaders are pushing for Democrats to negotiate executive actions the White House could take to address their concerns about immigration enforcement.
