The Georgia state Legislature has until Dec. 8 to enact new political district maps that provide more voting power for Black voters, under a Thursday federal court ruling that found lawmakers violated the Voting Rights Act.
The 516-page opinion found that five congressional districts, 10 state Senate districts, and 11 state House districts violated protections under Sec. 2 of the federal law—a hotly contested field that’s certain to garner a speedy appeal.
