GOP Bill With Trump Ballroom Funds Scrutinized by Senate Referee

Senate staff squared off Friday over parts of a $72 billion GOP spending package that includes funding for President Donald Trump’s proposed White House ballroom.

Republicans are leveraging the budget reconciliation process to circumvent Democrats and replace lapsed annual funding at the Department of Homeland Security Committee with long-term mandatory spending.

The party-line procedure can only be used for budgetary matters, allowing Democrats to challenge language on procedural grounds to shift the language or get it stripped altogether.
