GOP Voter Measure Will Stifle Voting, State Officials Warn (1)

Democrats and election analysts are warning that a Republican bill that would rewrite US election law to fundamentally change voting registration will impose heavy burdens on state and local election officials.

They contend the SAVE Act, which would tighten voter identification rules and require proof of citizenship to vote, would saddle already stretched election administrators with new obligations that do little to improve election security.

Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal, but the bill would layer new federal enforcement requirements onto states. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has also amended the legislation to add a nationwide photo ID requirement, ...
