Government funding path is clear, Mike Johnson’s isn’t

Congress’ path to skirt a government shutdown looks obvious after the House backed off Speaker Mike Johnson’s initial pitch. His own future is murkier.

Start with the most immediate issue — a funding bill needed by Sept. 30. It was clear from the start Johnson’s (R-La.) plan had little hope, and that was borne out when he canceled a floor vote.
