Health Research Funds at Risk as GOP Divided on Trump’s Cut Plan

The White House’s move to slash NIH grant funding is drawing mixed responses from Republicans—signaling the possibility for more cuts from lawmakers to the agency’s medical research budget that has historically had bipartisan support.

The National Institutes of Health announced Friday it would cap billions of dollars in “indirect costs” on grant funding spent by universities and research institutions to facilitate medical research—lowering it to 15%. These expenditures, known as facilities and administrative costs, are used to pay for utilities, maintenance and support staff salaries, among other items.
