Higgins Likely to Sail to Re-election, Dodge Penalty for Racism

GOP Rep. Clay Higgins’ racist comments about Haitians triggered outrage on the left and provided fodder for an upcoming censure attempt. But unless Republicans get on board with punishing one of their own members, it’s unlikely he’ll pay any real price.

Higgins should cruise to re-election next month in a deeply red Louisiana district where no other candidate has raised any money this cycle. His $716,155 in total campaign receipts, though meager compared to his more prominent and swing-district colleagues, is similar to what he’s raised in past elections, and most of his support comes from inside the state.
