The House returns from its weeklong recess to take up a pair of partisan deportation bills, as a partial shutdown of Homeland Security Department programs enters its fifth week.
Under the two measures, noncitizens who defraud the government or harm a federal law enforcement animal would be automatically subject to deportation. The House Rules Committee is set to meet today to set the terms of floor debate on the bills, which would need a simple majority for passage.
