House CR’s $30 Million for Member Safety Previews Bigger Debate

Congress could give lawmakers more than the $30 million now proposed in stopgap funding legislation for their personal security.

The continuing resolution proposed Tuesday would add $30 million to be used for lawmakers’ security, after last week’s shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk raised concerns about the threat of political violence. That money, which House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) described as a “plus-up” of existing programs, would be available for fiscal year 2026 until expended. And a separate, annual funding bill for the legislative branch will give lawmakers another “opportunity” to take a broader look at member security needs, ...
