House Democrats’ deference to seniority when promoting leaders hasn’t lost its importance even as many in the party call for a generational reckoning, according to veteran lawmaker Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.).
The strong defense of seniority from 84-year-old Clyburn, who was one of the highest-ranking Black lawmakers in history before stepping down from leadership, comes as the Democrats’ system faces a new test in the selection of the next Oversight Committee ranking member.
