House Gavel-Holders Funnel Big Campaign Sums to Party Committees

House committee leaders spent as much as half their campaign money to bolster their parties’ fundraising panels last Congress, according to a report by nonprofit Issue One that criticizes the “committee tax.”

The report, first shared with Bloomberg Government, highlights “how legislative leaders are trapped on a relentless fundraising treadmill to pay party dues.” Its authors call on Congress to require less campaign money from members and change House rules to reduce the importance of fundraising for an individual member’s standing.
