House Republican leaders hope to fund the government with a stopgap into March, according to a leadership aide, a play to allow President-elect Donald Trump and a likely GOP trifecta to make its mark on government spending.
The move to extend a Dec. 20 funding deadline would avoid major negotiations on fiscal 2025 funding in the lame-duck session, though it would put pressure on Trump to avert a shutdown early in his administration. Meanwhile, lawmakers may still need to approve disaster aid before the next Congress. And leaders have yet to say how they’ll handle an upcoming debt-limit deadline.
