House Republican leaders are trying to tamp down intraparty calls for Rep. Tony Gonzales to resign over allegations of an affair with a late staffer by waiting for a congressional investigation to conclude.

The married Texas Republican is being accused of initiating a romantic relationship with a district aide who died of suicide last year.

Multiple House Republicans, including Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), called on Gonzales to step down after explicit text messages between him and the staffer, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, were reported.
