House GOP Targets Senator Phone Records Provision in Stopgap

House Republicans will seek to undo a provision in the Senate-passed funding bill that would allow senators to sue the federal government over seizure of their phone records — but not until they’ve passed the underlying legislation to reopen the government.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) posted Wednesday that the House GOP will schedule a vote next week on standalone legislation to strike that language. It would require a two-thirds majority to pass in the House.

House Republicans were surprised and angry at their Senate colleagues for inserting the language into legislation to fund the government without their knowledge.
