House Republicans are preparing legislation that would create a national data privacy standard, seeking to address widespread calls to replace state laws with a uniform framework.
The proposal, expected to be released in the coming weeks, would broadly preempt state laws on data privacy and limit a private right of action, which allows individuals to sue companies over violations, according to four people familiar with the matter who were granted anonymity as discussions remain ongoing.
