House GOP Under Pressure to Swear in New Democrat Despite Recess

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is urging Speaker Mike Johnson to quickly swear in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) during a pro forma session in the House on Tuesday.

CHC Chair Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) said there is “a longstanding precedent” for swearing in new members, adding that Arizona’s 7th District can “not go without a voice” as Congress deals with pressing issues.

“There is longstanding precedent for swearing in a newly elected Member of Congress as soon as possible following a special election, so that the will of the voters is honored without delay,” Espaillat wrote to Johnson.
