House GOP Whip Says Killing Education Department ‘Long Overdue’

The third-ranking House Republican said he hopes Congress can enact President Donald Trump’s hollowing of the Education Department “and beyond”.

GOP Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.), speaking at a Bloomberg Government event Monday, said Trump’s executive order to dismantle the department is the furthest he can go under law. It’s up to Congress to codify those changes and permanently close the agency, Emmer added. Trump’s across-the-board cuts face lawsuits from teachers, parents, and state attorneys general.
