House Leaders Prep for Packed Post-Shutdown Legislative Schedule

House Republican leaders are preparing for a packed legislative schedule when lawmakers return from their prolonged shutdown recess — whenever that may be.

Committees will hold more hearings and markups than usual and lawmakers can expect late nights of voting, a House Republican familiar with leadership discussions said Wednesday. While Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has kept the House out of session since Sept. 19, despite opposition from Democrats and a handful of Republicans, he’s expected to reconvene his chamber when (and if) Senate Democrats fold to accept the clean, House-passed continuing resolution.
