House Leaves Early for Thanksgiving After Right Tanks Vote (1)

House leaders canceled votes for the rest of the week and left town earlier than expected today for a Thanksgiving break, after hard-right conservatives revolted to block work on a spending bill.

The move was seen as far-right lawmakers expressing frustration with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) after he cut a deal with Democrats to extend current spending into next year earlier this week. It came on a procedural vote to allow the chamber to begin working on the Commerce-Justice-Science spending bill with others also originally slated for later in the week.
