House Republicans Wednesday advanced a $77.3 billion package to fund the Departments of Commerce and Justice, as well as science-related agencies, for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.
The proposed budget marks a $670 million dip for the agencies from fiscal 2026 funding levels, with most cuts to science, research, and economic programs. The House Appropriations Committee approved the bill in a 32-28 vote along party lines after a lengthy markup considering several amendments. Democrats opposed the bill, slamming it as weakening US economic competitiveness and worsening public safety.
