House lawmakers passed a bill Monday that would mandate the federal government ship more cargo on US vessels.
The legislation (H.R. 2035), passed 373-14, proposes all Department of Transportation freight be transported via ships registered in the US. The bill’s bipartisan supporters say the move will create domestic jobs and protect the nation’s supply chains. Still, the measure represents an expansion of cargo preference laws.
“It’s great for our national security. It’s great for our economy. It creates jobs; it protects our supply chains,” sponsor Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.) said in an interview with Bloomberg Government.
