The main super PAC devoted to electing House Republicans is working against a previous nominee as top leaders try to tilt the direction of North Carolina’s only politically competitive congressional district.
First-time candidate Laurie Buckhout, who has the backing of the Congressional Leadership Fund, is a retired Army colonel and former defense contractor whose careers have become a campaign selling point.
“You have to have an understanding of Congress to be effective on day one,” Buckhout told a Republican gathering in Elizabeth City, N.C. “Otherwise it’s a very tough uphill battle.”
