House Republican Wants Electric, Hybrid Car Fees in Highway Bill

A proposal to impose federal registration fees on electric and hybrid vehicles likely will resurface in must-pass legislation to reauthorize the nation’s transportation programs next year.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Sam Graves said Tuesday he aims to insert user fees for EVs and hybrids into the bipartisan highway bill that Congress needs to pass in 2026.

“This will be the first new money in the trust fund in 30 years, and we have to address that,” the Missouri Republican said of proposed fees on the vehicles.
