Companies, Advocates Wrestle Over National Data Privacy Standard

Business and tech officials called on House lawmakers to advance legislation that would create a national data privacy standard to replace state-level regulations, while consumer advocates criticized the approach as too lenient on corporations, signaling challenges ahead for passage.

The testimony came during a hearing Wednesday held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s panel on commerce, manufacturing, and trade. Lawmakers examined the SECURE Data Act (H.R. 8413), which aims to give Americans control over their personal data online.
