Speaker Mike Johnson is staring down a mountain of unfinished business as the House returns today.
First and foremost is ending the government shutdown by passing a package of spending bills. If the House follows the Senate and backs it as expected, the chamber will resume its normal legislative activity after being out of session since mid-September.
Coming up soon could be a politically tricky vote on files related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, a shrinking of the House’s already-thin GOP majority, and a backlog of legislative activity. Tensions will be high after a seven-week shutdown battle.
