House Votes Scrapped Next Week as GOP Digs in Through Shutdown

Speaker Mike Johnson is canceling House votes for the fifth straight week, maintaining his hard-line position against convening his chamber during the historically long shutdown.

Lawmakers will remain in their districts next week, according to a message read on the House floor Friday, continuing more than a month of recess. Johnson (R-La.) is trying to put pressure on Senate Democrats to fold and accept the House-passed continuing resolution to reopen the government until Nov. 21 (H.R. 5371; BGOV Bill Analysis). GOP leaders have said members would get 48 hours’ notice to return if needed.
