Increased immigration during President Joe Biden’s administration strained state and local budgets, with nearly double the amount of costs than revenue, a new analysis shows.
The surge in migration from 2021 to 2023 raked in $10.1 billion for state and local governments, mostly through sales taxes, the Congressional Budget Office reported Thursday. But the increase cost them $19.3 billion, through education, shelter, and border security costs, the analysis said.
