Senate GOP Stopgap Bill at Risk of Losing Key Backer’s Support

Senate Republicans’ hopes of soon ending the government shutdown could be narrowing as one of the initial swing voters is considering changing his mind on supporting their stopgap funding plan.

Sen. Angus King (Maine), an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, was one of just three in the minority who have repeatedly split with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in votes to support the Republican stopgap bill (H.R. 5371). However, King is now contemplating whether to change his vote because he hasn’t seen assurances from Republicans on expiring healthcare subsidies.
