Iowa Republican Renews Effort to Block State Animal Welfare Laws

Iowa Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson plans to revive key legislation blocking a host of state animal welfare laws “within the next few weeks,” she said Monday.

Hinson’s bill, which she has championed for years, seeks to reverse laws limiting the confinement of certain livestock animals that have been subject to years of congressional debate, US Supreme Court litigation, and heavy industry lobbying. Hinson told reporters at an exclusive Bloomberg Government roundtable she’s working to ensure the legislation is included in the farm bill House Agriculture Chair GT Thompson (R-Pa.) expects to introduce in the fall.
