Johnson Rules Out House Return to Pass SNAP Fix Ahead of Cliff

Speaker Mike Johnson has ruled out calling House Republicans back to Washington this week to deal with the looming food stamp crisis that could affect millions as soon as this weekend.

Johnson (R-La.) said he wouldn’t call the House back to vote on piecemeal bills to pay essential workers or fund nutrition benefit programs, and placed blame for any disruptions on Senate Democrats.

“It’d be a futile legislative effort for us to do this again, repetitively in the House, and send it over there” just for Senate Democrats to “spike it,” the speaker told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday.
