Lackluster US Shipbuilding Efforts Get House Panel’s Attention

A House panel Wednesday will examine US progress in expanding domestic shipbuilding one year after President Donald Trump vowed to expand the nation’s maritime industrial base.

Trump pledged last April to boost commercial shipbuilding through an executive order before undermining that effort by delaying release of his Maritime Action Plan, reducing business for US flagged ships, reassigning key personnel, relaxing restrictions on Chinese vessels, and suspending the 1920 Jones Act. The hearing is part of a broader push in Congress to seize the initiative on shipbuilding by moving bipartisan legislation called the SHIPS for America Act (H.R. 3151). ...
