Self-Interested Lobbying Won’t Stop Stock Ban, Lawmaker Predicts

A leading House Democrat on the bipartisan push to stop lawmakers from trading stocks hopes a ban will be put in place this year — despite private lobbying of Speaker Mike Johnson from a small number of self-interested colleagues.

“Everyone who speaks about it publicly is for it,” Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) said of a congressional stock ban at an exclusive Bloomberg Government roundtable Wednesday. Magaziner has partnered with Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and a slew of other House members across the ideological spectrum in pursuit of a measure to block lawmakers from trading stocks, citing insider trading risks.
