Republican and Democratic Senate appropriators criticized Education Secretary Linda McMahon on Capitol Hill Tuesday about her department’s bid to funnel federal dollars away from college access programs and toward workforce development.
The bipartisan resistance during an Appropriations subcommittee hearing came as the administration—which has questioned the value of traditional higher education—again tries to wipe out funding for Federal TRIO programs in its fiscal year 2027 budget request.
Lawmakers from both parties rejected that proposal for fiscal 2026, keeping the funding at the same level as the prior fiscal year. Now, the department has moved to re-prioritize that funding instead.
