Louisiana Treasurer Courts Trump in Competitive Senate Race

Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming is courting President Donald Trump in his bid to cast himself as the top conservative candidate in a competitive GOP Senate primary next month.

Fleming, who has a lead in some polling, told Bloomberg Government he spoke to Trump by phone in mid-February—roughly a month after the president backed Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) in the race against Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.).

The Louisiana Senate primary has grown increasingly contentious as Cassidy fights to keep his seat and competing polls by each campaigns show each contender has a shot to win.
