Mayorkas Faces GOP Ire After Lawmakers’ Failed Impeachment Bid

Tempers flared as House Republicans grilled Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on border security two days after falling short in a sprint to impeach him.

Mayorkas testified Wednesday before the Homeland Security Committee, his third Capitol Hill appearance in as many weeks. Tensions were higher than usual after two of the panel’s Republicans led an impeachment push Monday.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) accused Mayorkas of aiding and abetting human trafficking by supporting border policies that Republicans blame for record migrant crossings, and Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) said he was “done” with Mayorkas and wouldn’t bother asking him questions.
