McCaul Won’t Take Homeland Security Gavel After Chairman’s Exit

Republicans face a competitive race to control the House Homeland Security Committee after Chairman Mark Green‘s upcoming departure.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said he will not take the gavel, despite early conversations with Green (R-Tenn.) and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) about serving as a placeholder for the rest of the term to avoid an intraparty fight.

“Since that time we’ve had four candidates popping up,” he said during an exclusive Bloomberg Government roundtable on Tuesday, adding that Steering Committee members “want to give time for other members to have a chance.”
