Mullin’s Slim Democratic Support Previews Future Cabinet Hurdles

On the first day of President Donald Trump’s second term, senators unanimously confirmed their colleague Marco Rubio to be secretary of state.

More than a year later, just two Democrats voted to confirm their colleague Markwayne Mullin as secretary of homeland security.

The limited support for Mullin stands in contrast to historically overwhelming confirmation of sitting senators. It also underscores a deterioration in bipartisanship on nominations that could present challenges for the Trump administration for the rest of this year and in the remainder of his term if Democrats make gains in November.
