New Jersey Democrat Sworn in to House, Narrowing GOP Majority

New Jersey Democrat Analilia Mejia was sworn in to the House of Representatives Monday, narrowing Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) majority less than a week after the Republican conference gained a slight buffer.

Mejia won an April 16 special election to replace Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who was elected in November last year. Republicans now have a 218-214 majority—including one independent who conferences with the GOP—and there are three current vacancies. With all members present, Johnson can only lose one vote and still pass measures along party lines.
