New Jersey state Sen. Nellie Pou will replace the late Bill Pascrell as the Democratic nominee on the Nov. 5 ballot, paving the way for the state to elect its first Hispanic woman to Congress.
Pou (pronounced POH) was nominated Thursday by a committee of Democratic officials in the 9th District, which takes in Paterson and surrounding parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties in northern New Jersey. The district favored Joe Biden by 19 percentage points in the 2020 election and Pou has a clear edge this fall over Republican nominee Billy Prempeh.
