New Parent Proxy Voting to Get House Vote After Speaker End-Run

A narrow proxy voting allowance for House members with newborns is primed for a full-chamber vote after its sponsors secured enough signatures to skirt GOP leadership.

At least 218 lawmakers, including 12 Republicans and most Democrats, signed Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s (R-Fla.) discharge petition aimed at forcing a floor vote on H. Res. 23, which would allow new parents to designate another member to vote for them rather than traveling to the House chamber.

House members would get 12 weeks of proxy voting under Luna’s resolution, which could be used at the end of a pregnancy in some cases. ...
