Stopgap Spending Bill Retains Farmer Aid, Policy Extension (1)

Congress sent a package extending farm bill policies for another year and providing farmers with $10 billion in economic assistance payments to President Joe Biden’s desk as part of funding legislation to avert a government shutdown.

The Senate cleared the legislation on a 85-11 vote, after the House earlier passed it on a 366-34 vote. The White House indicated Biden would sign the measure.

The extension ensures the farm bill doesn’t relapse to permanent law. It includes economic aid payments that would help farmers cover market losses caused by recently declining commodity prices.
