New Texas AI Bill Reflects Trump Push for Less Tech Oversight

Texas legislation introduced Friday by a GOP lawmaker highlights a growing gap between statehouse Republicans and Democrats over preventing potential abuses triggered by artificial intelligence.

Businesses that violate consumers’ civil rights with the emerging technology would face possible civil action from the state attorney general under the measure (H.B. 149) sponsored by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R). A previous measure (H.B. 1709) Capriglione authored would have made developers and users proactively assess their AI systems for risk areas such as employment discrimination.
