New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said Friday the state is building out its nuclear infrastructure, casting the energy source as a balance between affordable power and environmental safety.

Hochul’s embrace of nuclear generation foreshadows a battle next year with environmentalists and local community organizations that want her to more firmly commit to climate-friendly policies outlined in a 2019 law mandating New York reduce its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, including by transitioning to mostly renewable energy sources within the decade.
