Newsom Faces Pressure Campaign Over AI Chatbots’ Child Safety

Gov. Gavin Newsom is under growing pressure from children’s safety supporters to back the nation’s most far-reaching protections on artificial intelligence chatbots when California state lawmakers return in January.

Newsom (D) is set to immediately face frustrated advocates and state lawmakers who want to make sure their concerns are known well ahead of next year’s legislative session.

Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D) authored a bill vetoed by Newsom (AB 1064) that would have banned access by minors to harmful chatbots. She will be reintroducing the legislation.
