California Gov. Gavin Newsom named Rohit Chopra, the former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to lead a newly reorganized state agency overseeing banking and financial services.
Chopra will serve as the first secretary of California’s Business and Consumer Services Agency, which officially launches at the start of the state’s new budget year July 1. Newsom (D) cast the move as a contrast to President Donald Trump, who fired Chopra and has sought to dismantle the federal agency he led.
