NY Bill Would Make Social Media Algorithms Optional for Users

New York would become the first state to force social media platforms to allow all users to opt of algorithmically curated feeds under legislation to be announced Thursday.

The proposal, exclusively shared with Bloomberg Government, follows 2024 laws in New York (S7694A) and California (S.B. 976) that intended to curb targeted feeds for minors to protect their mental health by restricting how companies such as TikTok Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., which operates Instagram, present content. A US Senate panel advanced similar legislation on Wednesday and other states are considering similar action.
