New York lawmakers who want to curb the influence of money in politics are pushing a new measure that would limit a corporation’s powers to spend on federal, state and local election campaigns within the Empire State.
Bill sponsor Assemblyman Micah Lasher (D) of Manhattan said the measure would function as a legislative end-run around the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. The court in that case affirmed the right of corporations and other entities to spend unlimited amounts on elections as a form of free speech protection.
